A three-year-old waits patiently for a sand timer to run before rubbing brass polish off a miniature chalice. A four-year-old moves figures of the disciples around a model of the Upper Room. A five-year-old stands to admire the miniature vestments she has carefully arranged by liturgical color. Welcome to the St. Stephen Good Shepherd Atrium!
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of the young child. The catechesis is based on the conviction that God and the child are in relationship. The child has a deep need to experience and a special capacity to enjoy the presence of God. The goal of the CGS is to nurture this relationship and to assist the child in falling in love with God. This is accomplished in the Atrium using specially-designed "materials", prayer, song, listening to sacred Scripture and giving the child time to work with the materials.
